 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the start and end date of this scheme?

The site will begin construction 26 June 2009 with the delivery of single story starter cabin, off Cronkhill Lane, the forming of temporary car park and the delivery of fencing materials.  The new school is due to open January 2011.

Who is the main contractor for the scheme?

Laing O’Rourke will be the principal contractor responsible for the construction of all the new Advanced Learning Centres (ALCs) and the Special Schools and form part of the Barnsley Partnership for Learning (BP4L) consortium.  Laing O’Rourke is the UK’s largest privately owned construction company and has had a presence in Yorkshire for many years.  Recent local projects include the refurbishment of Meadowhall Shopping Centre, the construction of the new Barnsley Interchange and Laing O’Rourke’s new manufacturing facility in Steetly (Worksop)  Nationally Laing O’Rourke has been responsible for some major iconic projects, for more information on Laing O’Rourke go to www.laingorourke.com.

My house is close to the new building site.  How will it affect me?

Laing O’Rourke will keep you informed about the work happening in your area and you will receive regular newsletters, letters and updates before work begins in your area.

What are the site hours of working?

Hours of working will be between 07:30 – 18:00 Monday – Friday. Long haul deliveries may turn up earlier on occasion, but will be taken into site by the security guards for off loading after 07:30am.

Will there be weekend/out of hours working?

There may be occasions when we have to work out of hours, for example an oversized delivery or crane where we have to fit around highways restrictions. On occasions where out of hours work is necessary adjoining neighbours will try our best to notify residents in advance.

Where will the site workers park their cars?

There will be ample parking within the site compound to accommodate the site staff.

How will you minimise the impact of heavy goods on
Royston Lane
?

There will be a heavy goods holding area within our site to avoid heavy goods vehicles waiting around on

Royston Lane
. We will also be recycling as much site material as possible to minimise the number of vehicles leaving site and reduce our carbon emissions. There will also be a full time gateman who will manage traffic into site to minimise disruption. Subcontractors will be briefed regarding this requirement.

How will you monitor site noise?

Site noise will be monitored throughout the build and noisy operations will be kept within our agreed hours of working where possible. 07:30 – 18:00.

How will you keep the roads outside the site clean?

Laing O’Rourke will become a member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme on all of the new ALC sites.  As part of our commitment to this scheme we need to act as a responsible neighbour and make sure that the areas adjacent to our site are kept as clean as possible.  We have included a system of wheel washers at the exits of each site prior to any vehicle returning onto the highway.  At times of heavy traffic and at periods when conditions will allow unavoidable dirt to pass onto the highway we will provide a road cleaning vehicle to clean the adjacent roads.

How will you control dust?

During thconstruction and then the site will be monitored by security guards and 24 CCTV. The site will be surrounded by a 2.4m solid steel fence which acts as a major deterrent for breaking and entering. Local school children at Royston High and Edward Sheerien will also be taking part in Health & Safety Workshops to teach them of the dangers of entering a live construction site.

How will you protect the wildlife throughout the build?

We will be fencing off any protected areas prior to construction works commencing and consulting our dedicated Environmental Manager, Andrew Harris, for the BSF scheme, for any environmentally sensitive matters. A full environmental audit has taken place prior to us starting on site and the preservation of the local ecology will be monitored throughout the build.

How will you keep the site safe?

We will have a permanently manned site gate during hours of construction and then the site will be monitored by security guards and 24 CCTV. The site will be surrounded by a 2.4m solid steel fence which acts as a major deterrent for breaking and entering. Local school children at Royston High and Edward Sheerien will also be taking part in Health & Safety Workshops to teach them of the dangers of entering a live construction site.

Will there be job opportunities during the construction?

The principal contractor Laing O’Rourke has a high number of directly employed labour to ensure greater consistency and quality in their work as well as the transfer of skills between projects. There will be numerous job opportunities with Laing O’Rourke and subsequent sub-contractors working on the scheme.  For a full list of job opportunities and details on how to apply please email Becky Thompson. bthompson@laingorourke.com
